I think it is better to call the parable in (Luke 11: 15-32) “The parable of the Good Father and the Prodigal Son”, rather than just “The parable of the Prodigal Son”. This is because of at least the following reasons:
1- The hero in the story is “The Good Father”: whose paternity embraced and accepted the two sons, regardless of who they are and what they have done.
2- The parable includes the story of the lost young son who was astray away from his father’s house. He “went to a far country” (Luke 13:15).
3- The parable also includes the story of the other lost son. The older son was away in his heart very distant from knowing the meaning of the fatherhood. Also, he did not realist that all what the father had is his. “My son, you are with me all the time, and all that I have is yours” (Luke 31:15).
His bod was in the house but his heart was away: “This people will honor me with his lips, but his heart will depart from me far away” (Isaiah 13:29), (Mark 6: 7).
Jesus offered this parable after the “Parable of the Lost Coin” and the “Parable of the Lost Sheep”. He said these parables to respond to the indignant Pharisees and scribes. They said about Him, “He accept sinners, and eat with them” (Luke 2:15).
In this third parable, Christ drew an “Amazing Picture of God”. Some of the elements of this picture are as follows:
1- God is not just a king or the creator, He is the father of all: “A man has two sons” (Luke 11:15). “Have we not all one Father? Has not one God created us?” (Malachi 2:10).
2- The heart of God the Father embraces every human being, whether in the house (church) or outside the house (traveled to a distant country).
3- God the Father gives of His goodness even to those who do not deserve. “He divided to them his living” (Luke 12:15). ” He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust” (Matthew 5:45).
4- God the Father gives dangerous freedom to man. “I have set before you life and death: blessing and curse, and choose life, that you and your sons may live” (Deuteronomy 19:30).
5- God the Father put in the human being deep longing to return to Him. The older son said to himself, “How many of my father’s hired servants have bread enough and to spare, and I perish with hunger!” (Luke 15:17). ” I will arise and go to my father” (Luke 15:18). God “made eternity in their heart” (Gen. 11: 3).
6- God the Father is waiting for the repentance of His children. “When he [the younger son] was still a great way off, his father saw him and had compassion, and ran and fell on his neck and kissed him” (Luke 15:20).
7- God the Father embraces the repentant in His bosom and kisses him. “[The father] fell on his neck and kissed him” (Luke 15:20). “Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth– For your love is better than wine” (Song of Songs 1:2).
8- God the father to cover repentant and return him to the rank of sonship. “Bring out the first garment and put it on him [the righteousness of Christ] and put a ring in his hand [the ring of sonship] and put shoes on his feet [the readiness of the gospel of peace]” (Luke 22:15).
“When man fell, You God wanted to bring him back to his first rank” (Divine Liturgy).
9- God the Father enters into a new covenant with the repentant in the blood of Jesus Christ. The father said, “bring the fatted calf here and kill it, and let us eat and be merry” (Luke 15:23).
“Eat my body… Drink my blood of the New covenant, for the remission of sins and eternal life to those who partake of it”.
10- Repentance is the return to the father’s bosom is entry to the experience of the heavenly joy. “They began to rejoice (Luke 15:24). The older son heard “the sound of the instruments of singing and dancing” (Luke 15:25).
God the Father awaits you with his fatherly arms and kisses and the joy of heaven, that is not spoken and glorious, in the Lord Jesus Christ.
