I’m not a fan of interpreting the Book of Revelation in a tragic, historical manner, but the repetition of events in Egypt in the same pattern – as in the Kosheh, the Church of the Two Saints in Alexandria, Imbaba, Almokattam, Maspiro, Amiriya and many more – made me think of the Book of Revelation, in that view.
After I heard what happened in Dahshur this week, the story of the “Drunk Woman” in Revelation 17 came to mind. I thought of how she is the “hidden party” behind all the massacres and repeated crimes in Egypt, and in many places in the world, against the people of God. Who is this “Drunk Woman”? And even when shall we give serious attention to her matter? More importantly, How to get rid of her evils?
This woman is “drunk with the blood of the saints and with the blood of the martyrs of Jesus” that is, she is “drunk on the blood of God’s people who had given their lives for Jesus” (Revelation 17: 6). This isn’t much different from what we see today. In recent times a lot of terms such as, “Political Islam,” “Islamic Brotherhood,” “Islamic Group,” “Salafis,” “Mubarak and Habib Al-Adli’s Party,” “Alfeloul,” and “thugs” and others have been heard. It seems to me that they’re all working together – in one way or another – for the account of this “Drunk Woman”. They “do not know what they are doing” (Luke 23:34) as they all are drunk like her.
The truth is that this “Drunk Woman,” does not represent merely an externally applied power, but one “sitting on many waters” (Revelation 1:17), i.e. sitting on “peoples and multitudes and nations and tongues” (Revelation 15:17). Moreover, the word “sitting”, from the Koinee Greek origin, also carries the meaning of “reside.” Sadly, this “Drunk Woman” resides in the consciouses, the minds and the hearts of many people in Egypt and other countries. More dramatic is what St Paul said, “They have all turned aside; they have together become unprofitable; there is none who does good, no, not one” (Romans 3:12).
This “Drunk Woman” represents “the corrupted human nature” because of her sinful nature and evil deeds. She is the reason for the turmoil and tragedies taking place in Egypt and the whole world. And the works of this woman are evident, “which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like” (Galatians 5: 19-21).
The danger of the “Drunk Woman,” is not only because she resides in the conscious, the heart and the mind of many people, but more than that many Muslim elders (Sheikhs) advocate and promotes her agenda. One of the writers, in commenting on the events of Dahshur, recently wrote: “hatred, which has been promoted in the hearts of Muslims against Copts, by Wagdy Ghoneim, Omar Abdel Rahman, Brhamme, Zoghbi, Hassan, thrust, Shahat, Khalid Abdullah and others, bear fruit every day.”
The “Drunk Woman” could influence many ranks of Egyptian society and other countries as well, from “foot to the head” as Isaiah the prophet said (Isaiah 6:1). Many have become on the same image and attitude of the “Drunk Woman” because of their evil deeds. You can tell what they are by what they do. No one picks grapes or figs from thorn bushes (Matthew 7: 16-19).
Because of this “Drunk Woman,” many have become drunk, in Egypt and in many countries as well. Horribly, they are drunk, but on what is the most heinous of alcohol: drunk on the blood of the Copts and the Christians in Iraq and elsewhere. These drunken delights of killing Christians, looting, burn their homes, destroying places of work and sabotage installations countries. They do so under the slogan of establishing “Caliphate State “and” sharia law”.
Once again we see God’s people homeless, forced to leave their houses. But this time, in the streets of Dahshur, Egypt. I am wondering in grieve, Is this of the parameters of “Caliphate State”? Is this of the features of the law? Or is this the law of “Drunk Woman,” which revels unchecked and uncontrolled in Egypt and other? This is very alarming. I wish the whole world wake up. The activities of this “Drunk Woman” and her alliances are not confined to Egypt alone. They are also in Iraq, Syria, Europe, the United States and other countries in the world.
The advocates of reform and liberals, the advocates of the so-called “Moderate Islam” as well as the so-called “The House of the Family” in Egypt, have failed to solve the problem of “extremism” and “sectarian strife” and “bullying”. No one has “divine power” – or what we call “grace”- that alone can liberate people from the dark dominion of “Drunk Woman.” Only the grace of God can transform people to the nature of the heavenly Christ, the divine preacher of love and peace for all nations.
The only solution for all the tragedies in Egypt and the whole world is the response of God to the groaning of His people and saving them from the sufferings (Exodus 7:3). On the other hand, the acceptance of faith in Christ Jesus and His redemption is the way for the abundance of divine grace, the power that can change the nature of people. In Christ, we have redemption through His blood the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of His grace (Ephesians 1: 7). This is what I hope for, to our fellow Muslims and others, and pray for it.
My heart and my prayers are with every family displaced in Dahshur. !!
